What’s the deal with Christmas in July?

Australia, New Zealand, South Africa. Plenty of nations in the Southern Hemisphere celebrate this mid-year tradition. But why?

Although there’s a 1940’s movie of the same name, and the holiday was also celebrated by girl guides in North Carolina back in 1883. But these aren’t the inspiration for our Christmas in July down under.

December occurs in summer here, where temperatures can easily go over 35 degrees Celsius, or even 40 degrees in some places.

Since it’s so hot, most people aren’t too keen on cooking the roast turkey, pudding, and eggnog. Or eating it piping hot either. While some of us do still eat the traditional Christmas fare on the 25th of December, a lot of us also enjoy summer staples, like prawns or crayfish. Plus, with our beautiful, warm weather it’s more fun to spend the holidays outdoors, splashing in the pool or at the beach. Let’s face it laying around bursting to the seams with heaps of heavy food puts a bit of a dampener on that.

But there is something about a glass of mulled wine in the chilly weather. Christmas in July takes advantage of the rainy days and blustery evenings to give us that traditional Christmas feeling we don’t usually get in the summer.
In Australia it’s believed that tradition first began in the Blue Mountains, but no one is quite sure. Although it has become the spot for the biggest and best Christmas in July celebrations. Yulefest has been going for twenty years now! It’s held in the snowy Blue Mountains over the winter months, and folks flock there for a chance for that real, white Christmas feeling.

Good cheer here, all month long!

Even if we’re not quite sure how it started, it’s the perfect excuse to indulge in a hearty Christmas feast and ours comes with all the trimmings! Roast turkey with cranberry and stuffing, sherry trifle, mince pies, and of course, plenty of mulled wine!

The rain has already arrived, and so has July! We’re going to be bringing the good cheer all throughout the coldest month of the year!
